X Factor Week 7

7th December 2009

Ding dong, the twins are gone! On Sunday night, the X Factor judges and 16 million viewers waved goodbye to the last group, John and Edward. In the showdown between Olly Murs and Jedward, Danni’s final blow sent the twins packing on the grounds of it being a ‘singing competition’ – can’t disagree with her on that basis!

The 18-year old duo dragged in viewers from all over the country with their rebellious, cheeky and often infuriating antics. Despite the lack of talent, the dancing, rapping and extras carried the act 7 weeks in the live shows. Soon after the vote, Mr Cowell shocked the nation by announcing, “I’m actually going to miss you, I am.” This was greatly ironic considering the many weeks of criticism received from Simon. It seems that the twins even had the power to win our toughest judge over.

The performance that landed them in the bottom two was their feeble rendition of I’m your Man, a Wham classic. The song lacked the catchy vibe that they had brought in previous weeks, and the competition had got to the stage where they really couldn’t afford to keep acts in such as Jedward, and allow potential winners like Olly Murs to be eliminated.

Their mentor, Louis Walsh told The Times, “I definitely think the boys could have a career in entertainment…Kids absolutely love them and they could be the new Steps or S Club. I think they’d be great on kids’ TV as all round entertainers.”

The show’s PR, Max Clifford said, “They could make £2 million a year…Their fan base is five to 12-year-olds, so they should be kids’ TV presenters, like a junior Ant and Dec. They can bring records out on the back of that. They should also look at kids toys; there is a huge market.”

Now that we’ve given the twins the boot, we can get down to the real competition at hand. The next likely victim of the public vote will be Lloyd whose Gotta’ have Faith earned the comment “Fantastic”, from Danii whilst Louis was less kind with “I love everything except the voice”!

Joe proved himself once again to be the theatrical superstar, belting out a heartfelt “performance of his life” (Simon). Our favourite contestant, Stacey Soloman once again “stole the show” (Louis) with her big voice and even bigger personality. The moment of the night happened when Stacey was asked what she had to say in response to the judges compliments, and she blurted out “Fanks!” whilst engaging in her signature twitch. Stacey is undeniably talented and lovable, but her consistent choice of ballads makes her an easy comparison to Leona Lewis, the 2006 winner.

So what do we want to see next week? More fake tan on Simon? Bigger bow-ties for Louis? How about yet another hair style for Danii? Or, simply Cheryll Cole? All I know is that with a Jedward-free show, a performance from Alicia Keys and more TV gold from Stacey Soloman, it’s bound to once again prove to a show worth watching!
