X Factor Week 5 Travesty
14th November 2009
Starting only a matter of months ago, this year’ s X Factor has topped entertainment expectations in both vocals, and more importantly, drama. With only seven live acts left, the show is really hotting-up as we begin the countdown to 2009’s winner, but what do we want? Entertainment or talent?
Ideally the answer would be both, as demonstrated by the show’s previous superstars such as Leona Lewis, or even the uprising Alexandra Burke, but this year, we seem to either be served talent, or an entertainment of sorts. So is it the judges’ fault for shoddy mentoring? Or could it be the producers for moulding these raw acts into commercial, factory produced pop stars? The answer lies with the public and judges for allowing acts such as this year’s infamous John and Edward (or ‘Jedward’) to slip through the grasp of this contests rigorous stages.
A prime example of this was seen by all on Sunday night when Simon chose to relinquish the judge’s power, allowing the public’s vote to send home teenager Lucie Jones, who was clearly themore talented of the two bottom acts (herself and Jedward). So of course, Mr Cowell apologises, and the crowd all boo, but by this point it’s too late, and poor Lucie will slip back into the masses, becoming one of us again following her 15 minutes of fame. Brutal at best.
Sunday’s showsaw a record amount of 16.6 million viewers tune in to the results show. Of these, 3,000 complained to ITV according to reports, and in response, Ofcom will be investigating the show to set the record straight on the public’s vote.
As we all know, Jedward have caused huge controversy with their cheeky (or just annoying) attitudes and talentless rapping over the course of the show. But they’re not the only ones desperate for a few more inches in the tabloids. Unconfirmed reports have said that Simon Cowell planned for the twins to stay just to stir things up again, and create a few more headlines over X Factor – such as this one! So I guess it’s working Mr Cowell.
One thing we know for sure is that Britain’s X Factor boasts a good Saturday night. Whether it’s blasting vocals from our lovable contestants or insults thrown on the judges panel we know we can count on X Factor for laughter, tears and of course a chance to stare at Cheryl Cole!
