Upstage Super Hero party report
14th October 2008
On the night of Tuesday 7 October, Upstage theatre club held a highly successful superhero themed party at The Jailhouse. With a great concept (superheroes in jail) the tickets, impressively, managed to sell out. A lot of people were relying on the door tickets which caused an interesting situation!
Many people were enthusiastic and adventurous with their get up. There were outfits such as Buzz Lightyear, Bananaman, several different takes on Superman and of course homage was made to the late Heath Ledger who played the Joker in the recent Batman film. There were also several ironic superhero inventions such as Spandex man, Super Glue and a favourite among many, Super Noodle. And of course, it was not a Jailhouse event without a number of scantily clad female collectives. Due to the scarcity of tickets during the earlier part of the night, students began to nip off to a nearby garage with the intention of photocopying tickets for their fellow superhero friends. This ended when the Jailhouse bouncers started checking for authenticity. With super powers present in their minds though, another technique was introduced; climbing over the wall into the premises.
With the jailhouse at full capacity, the dance floor was heaving. The smoke machines were doing there best to fumigate everyone and the walls were, as someone nicely put it, ‘sweating’. The DJs on the other hand did their best to put on an audio ‘blast from the past’ with hits from the nineties on the forefront including the Backstreet Boys and Barbie. Although they did give it an up-to-date twist, with some Lily Allen,..hmm, yes.
All in all it was an awesome night and congratulations to Upstage for such a fun night.
They managed to raise over £1000, which warrants a good first production of ‘Apples’ and “The Learned Ladies”. Please continue to support our college theatre club and in return you have the opportunity to experience some mega parties and certainly some wonderful productions!
