Robots in Disguise Get the Party Started!
14th March 2008
2008 has seen an explosion of gigs in and around Hereford, all thanks to the boys from Idle Hands. The 30th January saw the Jailhouse host Idle Hands' 1st birthday party. Right from the outset this was going to be a great night, filled with alcohol and electro music. Headlining this extraordinary night were none other than Robots in Disguise (otherwise known as the girls from The Mighty Boosh!).
The queue to get in snaked all the way around the corner, and there was a buzz of excitement coming from the Boosh fans, despite the fact it was starting to rain – much to the fascination of onlookers, who had obviously never seen an event quite like this in sleepy little Hereford.
Advert Shock kicked off the night’s proceedings with all the charisma and charm you would expect from former Hereford Sixth Form boys! By the end of the set they had got a fair few people leaping about all over the place, all in the name of electro/ experimental music. (Seriously, if the people who stared at us outside had been inside now, they would have had us all sectioned.)
To keep the momentum on a high, Pencil Toes' Sam Jarvis filled the gap in between sets with his electric DJ set. Next in the spot light was Medallist; the Bristol boys pumped out one catchy tune after another. By this point the precarious speakers by the stage were beginning to rock uncontrollably, as the tiny dance floor filled with people. Amidst the wave of excitement that was gripping each and every individual that had gathered in Hereford’s one and only venue, Medallist came to the end of their set in a blaze of glory that was doubled when Robots in Disguise took to the stage.
After what seemed like hours of screaming (the culmination of weeks of excitement), the moment we had all been waiting for… the music started. At this point there was no longer any room to move in the tiny, little venue and everybody was pushing and shoving, desperately trying to get a glimpse of Dee’s cool belt! The set came to an unbelievable end all too soon, having consisted of stage diving and a lot of crazy dancing (think the ‘funky chicken’ crossed with some sort of ‘locomotion’). I would suggest to anybody with any form of musical taste to check out their song ‘Music Business’.
Then, in the blink of an eye, possibly the most exciting people to ever grace Hereford’s gum-covered pavements were gone. What could top such an eventful night, I hear you cry? Well the answer is a DJ set consisting of all the old classics, which came as an explosion of pure glee for those of us who hadn’t departed with the Robots in Disguise girls.
In conclusion, the night was a triumph. You truly had to be there to believe the incredible presence that is Robots in Disguise (who are now supporting Mindless Self Indulgence). Let's just hope that this musical extravaganza continues.
